MENTAL HEALTH NEWS

Oct 2009, Loneliness

Did you know that loneliness, if not taken seriously, could spread?

It has been shown that loneliness affects people’s trust and they trust less as they become lonelier. In a recent study conducted by Cacioppo and colleagues (2009), they found that not only lonely people tend to have fewer friends but also they tend to lose the few friends left. In addition, the researchers associate loneliness with mental (e.g., depression) and physical diseases and emphasize the importance of reconnecting with social groups. Given the reported patterns, it is important to recognize the signs of loneliness in others and us and reconnect with our social ties as well as provide support.
