What is psychotherapy?

Wikipedia defines psychotherapy as:

“Psychotherapy or personal counseling with a psychotherapist, is an intentional interpersonal relationship used by trained psychotherapists to aid a client or patient in problems of living. It aims to increase the individual’s sense of their own well-being. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change and that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family).”

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?

A psychologist is trained to study human behavior and mental processes and can work in a variety of research or clinical settings. A psychologist can diagnose disorders or problems in her patients/clients and determine appropriate treatments. Since 2006 a doctorate degree is required for licensing and practicing in clinical settings such as hospitals and private practice. A psychologist’s receipt is accepted by all insurance companies.

A therapist is a broader umbrella term. Therapists can be psychoanalysts, marriage counselors, social workers and life coaches, among other specialties. Therapists provide support and guidance, while helping clients make effective decisions. Some therapist’s receipts are accepted by some insurance companies.

How many sessions do I need?

The length and the frequency of therapy depend on each person’s unique circumstances such as the nature of the problem, the onset, your level of readiness for change, available resources and support system.

Is therapy expensive?

In short term, yes! However, if you view therapy as an investment in your health, which in long term can save you days missed at work, money spent on alcohol/drugs/medication etc, and a means to increase your productivity, it is not expensive. In addition, if you have group or private insurance, your insurance company will reimburse you. You need to determine your overage by your insurance company.
